The final part of our ‘How to find the right developer for you’ tells you exactly how to approach developers, making sure you get the best people for your project.
Not sure who to approach; agency or developer? Check out the first in our series, Agency vs. Freelancer: How to find the right developer for you
How to approach your developer
Approaching your developer, like any other agency or freelancer, starts with a simple brief. Make sure you know exactly what you need, for example, a new booking system or the integration of data capturing forms that feed through to your CRM system.
Your developer of choice might reach out with some additional questions, so it’s worth adding these points into your initial email:
- Aim of the project: What do you want to achieve, or what are you looking for the developer to do?
- Current CMS: What is your current CMS? This is one of the first things your developer is going to ask, so it’s worth mentioning this straight away.
- Budget: It’s important to have even a rough idea of what your budget will be because, if it’s not enough to cover the cost of everything you want to do, you might need to reconsider your budget or scale your project back.
- Deadline: Freelancers in particular will need to take deadlines into consideration before quoting for you. Due to other commitments, they’ll need to know if they can fit your work in ahead of your deadline.
- When was the last time a developer looked at your site: Now, this may sound like a non-essential mention, but it’ll give a potential project developer a good idea of what to expect. During the months or years your website has been developer-free, there might have been some important updates to your plugin and any core update that are required to ensure your changes are successful. Your developer will want to take these into consideration ahead of quoting their time for your project.
How much should you budget?
A bit like hiring a designer or business consultant, you really do get what you pay for. You can always find a developer for your budget, but depending on your needs, it could cost you anywhere from a couple of thousand pounds or dollars, to a lot more.
One thing we can guarantee is that, with the right developer for you, your money will be well spent.
