How and why we’ll be donating to charity in 2021/22

I’ve always been passionate about giving back to the community. Whether it’s the WordPress community, our local community in Wimbledon, or communities in need, giving back is an important part of what Powered by Coffee does.

Until now, any giving we did or support we gave had been ad hoc, driven by myself and my interests as a director and the primary decision maker within Powered By Coffee. But this didn’t feel right anymore.

Our team is growing. Anything we give as a company should reflect the goals and concerns of those that make that company live and breathe.

So when we decided to select a charity to work with over the next 12 months, we had two important criteria.

The charity had to:

  1. Benefit a community in the UK
  2. Be nominated by a member of the team

We invited every team member to suggest a cause or charity that could become our focus for the year. We then took an internal vote of who we should support – except the cause you suggested – and came up with a shortlist of nominations.

Once the nominations were in, we asked the good folk of LinkedIn there to help us choose which charity to support and to make sure the decision was completely impartial. Once the voting closed, DKMS UK was chosen as our charity for 2021/22.

Why DKMS UK?

As I mentioned before, the charities had to be nominated by the team. DKMS UK was nominated by our Head of Marketing, Coral and here’s why she nominated this worthy cause:

DKMS is a charity that matches people willing to donate their blood stem cells or bone marrow to people who desperately need lifesaving transplants due to blood cancers.

I nominated this charity as my mum was diagnosed with Grade 2 Lymphoma back in 2016. I’m fortunate enough to say she’s one of the lucky ones who are able to carry on their everyday lives, only interrupted by the odd blood test. But unfortunately, not everyone is so lucky. Fundraising helps DKMS afford their essential swab test kits, raise awareness of the importance of joining the stem cell register, and help match potential donors with people in need.

How will we donate money?

There’s a whole host of ways we’d like to donate money, but while we wait for the world to open up again, we’ll be donating £25 each time one of our current or previous clients reviews us on Clutch.

Throughout the year though, you can access our donation page DKMS UK page here. However, if you’d like to sign up to the register, you can click here.

Special thanks from us and DKMS UK

I speak on behalf of myself, the team and DKMS UK when I say we really appreciate everyone who has taken the time to read about our charity for 2021/22. Awareness of not just blood cancers, but the life-saving stem cell register, is key to finding a match for the hundreds of people looking for a match and a bone marrow transplant.
